AmaWaterways offers a variety of dining venues – at no additional charge – including The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant. Guests watch as the chef prepares a true tasting menu with three appetizers, a champagne sorbet intermezzo, three main courses and three decadent desserts—all paired with carefully hand-selected wines reflective of the places visited. Because of the lack of space on the rivers, it means that river cruise companies may have to give up certain amenities to make room for guests onboard – but that’s not always the case. AmaLucia offers an environment of casual luxury, along with an incredibly welcoming staff.
NEW ITINERARIES AND EXPERIENCES
The next deck is the Cello Deck, home to staterooms and the main restaurant, followed by the Violin deck, with more staterooms, reception, the lounge, a gift shop, and the Chef’s Table restaurant. Most of the public areas are forward of or just behind the central atrium, which houses the elevators, though the Chef’s Table, which is all the way aft. Up top is the open-air Sun Deck, where there’s a running track, a small pool, loungers, and a smoking area. In addition, luggage tags are made from 100% recycled plastic bottle material and are now delivered to guest staterooms on board ships in Europe, reducing the line’s carbon footprint.

All AmaWaterways’ ships in Europe are members of the prestigious La Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, an international gastronomic society dedicated to fine cuisine. AmaWaterways’ culinary team crafts menus with the finest and freshest local ingredients. Selections change daily, featuring locally-inspired gourmet cuisine and traditional favorites. In 2018, the company welcomes the AmaLea, sister ship to AmaKristina; and then in 2019, the company introduced a new Rhine River ship, AmaMora, sister ship to AmaLea, and on the Douro River, AmaWaterways debuted the 102-passenger AmaDouro.
Enjoying Rüdesheim After Dark
Viking also has six smaller "Baby Longships," which sail the Douro River in Portugal and the Elbe River in France, which runs through Germany and the Czech Republic. Then, there are the ships in Egypt and China, Vietnam, which the line either owns or charters. All told, the fleet stands at 70 (excluding ships currently not operating in Russia). Boats in the AmaWaterways fleet also offer bikes, which can be used in port as part of an excursion or for solo exploration. AmaWaterways also has a partnership with Backroads, an active touring company.
On European itineraries Viking recommends 18 euros per person per day, which can be prepurchased or automatically added to the shipboard account. Both suggest gratuities of around 2 euros for tour guides and one euro for bus drivers. AmaWaterways invited me to be their guest to sail their 7-night Captivating Rhine itinerary from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, on their newest ship, AmaLucia. This floating luxury boutique hotel is filled with amenities, including a panoramic lounge, an expansive sun deck with a pool and walking track, complimentary bicycles, and daily wellness activities.

Shopping at boutiques along the Rue du Dôme, the Rue des Juifs, and in Petite France was a treat. Enjoy panoramic views and plenty of fresh air in our lavish twin-balcony staterooms that feature both a French balcony and an outside balcony. How Do the Two Lines Compare for Shore Excursions?
The ships even have a "gluten-free corner," where passengers can find snacks at all hours of the day. With either line, passengers will find plenty of room for lounging, whether outdoors on the top deck or inside in the ships' lounges. Both lines offer concierge services, books to borrow on topics like history or tourism, comfortable bars for drinks and dancing and top-deck walking tracks and giant chess boards. Ships on both lines feature elevators, and some Viking ships have sun deck herb gardens, which chefs use daily. One of the best seats in the house onboard Viking's Longships, the Aquavit Terrace beautifully combines indoor/outdoor dining with a casual feel. During the day, passengers can skip the ship's dining room for buffet dining.

Iconic châteaux, timeless vineyards and delicious wine tastings are plentiful as you visit Libourne, Blaye, Bourg, Pauillac and Cadillac. Following the cruise, enjoy two nights to experience the lure of the UNESCO-designated Loire Valley, where Leonardo da Vinci lived and is buried. This trip is a must for anyone interested in the best of French culture, lifestyle, wine and food.
Chilling Out In The Pool
It is a dreamy hilltop village, hundreds of years old, with stone buildings made from the distinctive golden limestone found in the surrounding area. Winding my way up the hill, I noticed little decorative details, murals and amazing vistas that would appear as you look down a side street. Next we visited a family winery that has been harvesting grapes from vines that are over 100 years old! As we stood on the hillside vineyard, the owner spoke of his growing techniques while his dog ran around us, excited for new attention. The wines were young and light-bodied and complemented well with local cheese and cured meats.

Last night we celebrated our 34th anniversary on the amawaterways Amasonata at the chef’s table. #amasonata #rivercruise #greattrip #vacation#anniversaryvibes #themarriedlife #amawaterways #amawaterwaysdanube... If you’re a traveler seeking to delve deeper into Lisbon’s history and culture, AmaWaterways has an enticing offer for you.
Cabin categories for Viking and AmaWaterways are pretty similar and vary from a standard riverview cabin with small windows all the way to suites with French and walk-out balconies. AmaWaterways has maximized its guest stateroom views with not one, but two private balconies – a French balcony and a full outside balcony. 2017 marked the arrival of AmaWaterways’ 20th ship with the new AmaKristina, as well as the company’s 15-year anniversary. The AmaLucia staff did an excellent job dealing with food allergies, and they surprised their guests with unannounced treats like gelato parties and other delights during our cruise.
I was impressed with the consistently high quality of our meals and the personalized, attentive service on the AmaLucia. AmaLucia’s dining areas include the Main Restaurant, the panoramic Al Fresco Terrace, and the elegant Chef’s Table complimentary dining venue. The Chef’s Table is a reservation-only gourmet culinary experience featuring an exquisite multi-course tasting menu paired with complimentary wines. The Main Restaurant serves three mouthwatering meals daily, with menus featuring fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and regional cuisine, including exceptional meats and seafood. Wines, beer, and soft drinks are complimentary with meals, and a tapas menu is available in the lounge. Belgium and the Netherlands sit below sea level and encompass the land around the Rhine Delta and the North Sea.
In fact, “Ama” is derived from the Latin word for “love.” It is a concept that permeates every aspect of their river cruises, from the design of the ships to the development of itineraries to the high levels of service delivered to guests. AmaWaterways is always looking to innovate, offer exciting new destinations and add extra value for each and every guest. The Rhine River is the setting for one of Europe’s most popular river cruise itineraries.
Guests come together to share stories at mealtimes and get to know each other better on shore excursions. We had fun with new friends in the evenings, enjoying the entertainment and dancing the night away in the Main Lounge and at parties on the sun deck. I enjoyed sampling local wines and viewing the terraced vineyards, but one of my favorite experiences was exploring Rüdesheim after dark.
